Couples Therapy

Relationships are such an integral part of our experience as human beings. Couples therapy is a helpful tool for increasing the health of any romantic relationship. The following are some common issues that couples work on and improve in therapy:

  • Increasing healthy communication

  • Resolving conflict

  • Managing the stress of parenting young children

  • Healing after a break in trust

  • Improving friendship and connection

My approach to couples therapy is based around providing couples a space to practice communicating about important issues, while providing directive feedback around healthy communication. I prioritize listening and learning about each individual and the couple as a unit, and then providing tools that will help the couple improve communication, resolve conflict, trust one another, and build their connection.

Premarital Counseling

Premarital counseling is a wonderful way to prepare for the journey of marriage and is often required or highly recommended for certain marriage ceremonies. Couples use premarital counseling to learn tools for healthy communication and conflict management. Couples discuss their values and goals, and plan for shared responsibilities in their personal and professional lives. Marriage is such a fulfilling and joyful step for couples to make together. Premarital counseling helps ensure that couples are prepared for the challenges of this step, so that the marriage can be a long and healthy one.

Theories I draw from in couples therapy include:

  • Gottman’s “Sound Relationship House” theory

  • Susan Johnson’s Emotionally Focused Therapy

  • Harville Hendrix’s Imago couples therapy
